Since the beginning of time, morality has been a central component of human society. We strive to create the best moral standards possible. Laws have been enacted, treaties signed, and unions formed in order for people to live as morally as possible. But imagine a dystopian society in which the basic morals we consider necessary did not exist, and with the most fundamentally basic human rights standards vanished. The two short stories Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson exemplify two societies with completely different moral codes. The compelling short story Harrison Bergeron, by Kurt Vonnegut, is set in a future dystopian society. Morally corrupt, the government plays a major role in displaying the dystopian societal morals of this story. Government is supposed to play a positive role in people’s lives. From enforcing morality and human rights, to simply supplying its citizens with fair and just treatment, government is supposed to be the backbone of society. But in this story, the government is the exact opposite. (quote) Morality in the sh ort story Harrison Bergeron plays a major role in the development of a strong central them and plot. The story begins with an entire town gathering in a designated spot for an unknown lottery drawing. The reader is left completely in the dark to guess what the lottery drawing is for. But after a while an elderly man comes with a box containing multiple folded pieces of paper. The head of each household in the town then must come up and pick from the box.
